Bangkok Train Station
The Bangkok to Hua Hin train departs from the Hua Lamphong train station in Bangkok. The train station is really big and there are various counters where you can buy train tickets. If you walk further towards the back of the train station past the ticket counters you will find the men and women toilets. The toilets cost 3 Baht and if you need toilet paper you can buy some for 10baht from the vendor sitting at the door.
The train station has various food stalls as well as coffee shops such as Black Canyon Coffee. Black Canyon Coffee is situated upstairs and gives you a great view of the entire train station.
When it is time to board your train you need to walk over to the area where the trains pull into the station. There are a few platforms so make sure to find out which platform your train departs from when you purchase your ticket. The platforms have boards with details of the next trains departure so you can double check that you are at the right platform.
Getting Train Tickets
There are a few trains that travel this route every day.
Second Class Train
the fastest train is the second class express train departing at 08:05am. Second class train tickets are often fully booked, therefore you need to pre-book tickets for the second class train as you will not find available tickets when you get to Hua Lamphong train station as they sell out quickly. The best way to pre book tickets for the 08:05 second class train is by using the12goasia website for bookings. The tickets are around 300 Baht if you can manage to buy it at the train station. The tickets online are little more pricey and range between 400 Baht and 500 Baht.
Third Class Train
There is no need to pre-book third class train tickets as they are always available at the station. There are more passenger carriages on this train than with the second class train. A one way train ticket costs 44 Baht. Third class trains tend to be delayed at times and take around 4 hours to reach Hua Hin from Bangkok.
The second class train is air-conditioned and the third class train is not air-conditioned, it has fans thou and you can open the windows.? Purchase second class train tickets here.
Onboard the Train
Second Class Train
The second class train has air-conditioned compartments and comfortable padded seating. Passengers are provided with meals as well. Each train carriage has a toilet as well.
Third Class Train
The train stops at just about every single station. There are many people selling food and snacks on the train such as fruits, Thai meals, soda, crisps, popcorn and salads. They are all reasonably priced too. Each train cart has a toilet as well.
The train is not air-conditioned but has multiple fans. One downside of the third class train is that it does get really hot and so all the windows are open. There is a lot of dust that comes in through the open windows. Seating on the third class train is pretty basic. Passengers get on and off the train at each of the different stations.
Hua Hin Train Station
The train station in Hua Hin is very beautifully designed. It has such intricate architecture. The train station is not as busy and bustling as the train station in Bangkok but it does have a lot of foot traffic. When you walk out of the train station you will find various transport options to take you to your hotel or other destination in Hua Hin. There are motorbike taxi’s, vans, Song Theaw’s and private taxi’s you can take to your destination.
Hotels Close to Hua Hin Station
There are a lot of accommodation options throughout Hua Hin from Hotels to guest Houses. The accommodations are also placed at various places, some are close to the beach and some are a little further. Some hotels are closer to the nightlife too. Some hotels that are within a 5-minute drive from the Hua Hin train station are The Beach Hotel, Amara Resort Hua Hin and Anchan Hotel and Spa.
The Anchan Hotel and Spa was really great for a number of reasons. It is centrally located in Hua Hin which means the beach, the center of town and everything else is within walking distance or a short taxi ride.
The hotel has a beautifully designed spa as well and they offer discounted prices to hotel guests. The treatments at the spa are reasonably priced and guests can choose if they want a male or female masseuse .
The hotel also has a fully stocked bar and they have a great variety of cocktails and other drinks to choose from. They have a swimming pool area with poolside loungers, giving off a very tranquil feel to it.
Anchan hotel rooms are en suite and have a modern design. The decor in the room is modern too and has a mini bar too. The hotel does not’t have a restaurant but there any restaurants around where you can grab a bite to each as the Moon Smile Restaurant right next door.
The food at the Moon Smile Restaurant is fresh and delicious. I ordered a deep-fried fish with a Mango, onion and tomato relish served with seafood sauce.
What’s really nice about this restaurant is that they put lot of effort into how they prepare and present the food that you order. Not only is the food really tasty, but It is decoratively garnished, making it more appealing. One of the dishes I tried was the traditional Thai dessert, Mango and sticky rice. They really put a lot of attention to detail into the preparation.
If you are looking to tantalize your taste buds even further you should definitely head on over to the Hua Hin Night Market, it opens at 6pm every evening.
